The Peptide Industry's Accreditation Illusion: We Checked the Labs Behind Your COAs

If you buy research peptides, you have almost certainly been sold a word: accreditation. “ISO 17025 accredited lab.” “Accredited third-party testing.” “Lab-verified purity.” It is printed on product pages, stamped on marketing banners, and repeated in forum arguments as the thing that separates a legitimate vendor from a scam.

So we did the obvious thing almost no one does: we went to the accreditation bodies themselves and checked.

The short version — and the reason we changed how we grade — is this: across the independent labs that issue peptide COAs, we could not find one with a publicly verifiable ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation scope that actually covers peptide purity or identity. Some labs are not accredited at all. Some hold a genuine ISO 17025 certificate — for a completely different kind of testing. And at least one markets “ISO 17025” with no certificate number and no accrediting body we could verify anywhere.

This is not an accusation that every lab is bad or that every COA is fake. Many of these labs do real, useful work. It is a narrower and more important point: “accreditation” is being used as a trust signal that, for peptides specifically, almost no lab can actually back up. Here is the record.

1. The claim buyers are relying on

Walk any peptide vendor’s site and you will see testing framed as the guarantee. The pitch is intuitive: an “accredited lab” sounds like an audited, government-blessed authority, and “ISO 17025” sounds like the gold standard. Buyers reasonably conclude that an accredited-lab COA means the purity number on the certificate has been independently vouched for by that authority.

The problem is that accreditation is scope-specific. ISO/IEC 17025 does not accredit “a lab” in the abstract. It accredits a laboratory to perform specific tests, by specific methods, on specific matrices — and that defined scope is published in the accrediting body’s directory. A lab can be genuinely, currently ISO 17025 accredited and still have peptide purity testing entirely outside its accredited scope. The badge on the website and the scope on the certificate are not the same thing — and only the scope is verifiable.

2. How we checked (and our limits, stated honestly)

We treated each accreditation claim as a claim to verify, not a fact to accept. For each lab we looked for a certificate number and an accrediting body, then checked that body’s own public registry:

  • A2LA (American Association for Laboratory Accreditation) — public accredited-organization search, including the published scope document.
  • ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) — accredited-laboratory directory.
  • PJLA (Perry Johnson Laboratory Accreditation) — accredited-lab search.
  • IAS (International Accreditation Service) — accredited testing-laboratory directory.
  • CMS / CLIA — for any lab leaning on a CLIA certificate, we checked the certificate type (clinical vs. Certificate of Waiver) via CMS.

Method is credibility. A claim that verifies in one of those registries — cert number, accrediting body, and a scope that names the relevant testing — is real. A claim that does not is, at best, unverifiable.

Our limits, stated plainly. A public directory shows a certificate and, usually, a scope document; it does not always expose every internal method line, and scope documents are technical and occasionally ambiguous about whether a given peptide assay is inside or outside the accredited boundary. Where we could not confirm something from a primary source, we say “unverified” below rather than asserting a conclusion. We would rather be narrow and right than broad and wrong.

3. The labs behind your COAs — claimed vs. verifiable vs. peptide-scope

Each entry states three things: what is claimed, what actually verifies in a registry, and whether peptide purity/identity is inside an accredited scope.

Janoshik Analytical. The de-facto community standard for peptide testing, and it runs a genuinely useful public per-test verification portal (public.janoshik.com) where a COA can be checked against the lab’s own records. But on the accreditation question: Janoshik’s own site makes no ISO 17025 claim. It is not ISO accredited. Where you see “Janoshik, ISO 17025” it is a vendor adding a badge the lab itself does not assert. Janoshik’s real value is verifiability and track record — not accreditation.

Olympic Analytical Laboratory / Vanguard Laboratory. This one is instructive. There is a real A2LA certificate (6377.01, ISO/IEC 17025:2017, valid through 09/30/2027). The accreditation is genuine. But the accredited scope, per the A2LA scope document, is microbiology, trace metals by ICP-MS, and residual solvents — not peptide purity or identity. So a COA from this lab can be accompanied by a legitimate accreditation certificate whose scope has nothing to do with the peptide purity number you care about.

MZ Biolabs. Registered with the DEA (registration RP0584676) and a real analytical lab. But a DEA registration is a controlled-substance handling credential, not ISO 17025 accreditation. We found no ISO 17025 accreditation for MZ Biolabs.

NuMega Resonance Labs. Describes itself as “GLP compliant.” Good Laboratory Practice compliance is a self-declared quality framework — it is not third-party ISO accreditation. GLP-compliant is not the same as accredited, and it does not verify in an accreditation registry.

Freedom Diagnostics. Holds a CLIA Certificate of Waiver (14D2263999). This is worth being precise about: a CLIA waiver is a clinical-diagnostics credential, and it is the wrong yardstick for research-use-only peptide purity — different regime, different purpose. The point is not that the CLIA waiver is a “deficiency”; it is that CLIA is a different category entirely. On the actual question — ISO 17025 accreditation covering peptide purity/identity — we found none.

TrustPointe Analytics. A real, independent US peptide lab with a public LIMS verification key on its COAs — but not accredited. It does not claim, and does not hold, a verifiable ISO 17025 accreditation.

Peptide Test. Not accredited — and, to its credit, explicitly describes itself as pre-accreditation. That honesty is the right posture; it is simply not an accredited lab today.

ILS Laboratories. This is the one that crosses from “not accredited” into “unverifiable claim.” ILS markets “ISO 17025” — but publishes no certificate number and no accrediting body, and we could not find it in any registry (A2LA, ANAB, PJLA, or IAS). We are not saying ILS is or isn’t accredited somewhere; we are saying the claim as published cannot be verified, and an unverifiable accreditation claim should be treated as no claim at all.

4. Three ways “accreditation” misleads

Reading the record above, the failures fall into three clean buckets:

  • Scope mismatch. A real, current ISO 17025 certificate — for the wrong tests. (Olympic Analytical/Vanguard: accredited for microbiology, metals, and solvents; not peptide purity.) The badge is true; it just doesn’t cover what you’re buying.
  • Unverifiable self-claim. “ISO 17025” on the marketing, with no cert number and no accrediting body that verifies anywhere. (ILS Laboratories.) You cannot check it, so you cannot rely on it.
  • Category confusion. A credential from a different regime dressed up as equivalent to accreditation — a DEA registration, a GLP self-declaration, or a clinical CLIA certificate standing in for ISO 17025. (MZ Biolabs, NuMega, Freedom Diagnostics.) Real credentials, wrong category.

5. What actually signals a trustworthy COA

If accreditation can’t carry the weight, what should? The signals a buyer can actually verify:

  • Independent + portal-verifiable. A named outside lab with a public per-test verification path (Janoshik’s public portal, or a lab LIMS verification key), so the COA can be checked against the lab’s own records — not just a PDF a vendor could have edited.
  • Lot-matched and recent. The certificate ties to the specific batch you’d receive, and it’s recently dated — not a generic or years-old document reused across stock.
  • Full, method-stated panel. HPLC for purity, mass spec (LC-MS) for identity, and endotoxin/sterility where relevant — with the methods and instruments stated on the COA.
  • External corroboration. A second independent lab or an aggregator (e.g. Finnrick) agrees, rather than a single unverified source.

None of those four require an accreditation badge. All of them are checkable by a motivated buyer — which is exactly the point.

6. What we changed

We put our own methodology to the same test, and it failed the honesty check: our Sourcing & COA grading previously anchored top marks on “accredited-lab COAs (Janoshik, ISO 17025)” — a phrase that, per this investigation, misattributes an accreditation Janoshik never claimed. We fixed it.

The Sourcing & COA axis (still 30% of a compound’s PepScore, still a 100-point axis) now rewards what’s verifiable:

  • Independent + portal-verifiable testing — 35 pts
  • Method transparency (HPLC purity + MS identity + endotoxin/sterility, methods stated) — 25 pts
  • Lot-matched + recent — 25 pts
  • Independent corroboration (e.g. Finnrick / a second lab) — 15 pts

The vendor “Independent Testing Rigor” pillar (still 25% of a vendor’s grade) no longer anchors on “Janoshik ISO 17025.” It now anchors on independent third-party COAs with a public verification link, a full panel, and lot-matching. And a registry-verified, peptide-scoped ISO 17025 accreditation — cert number and accrediting body and peptide-inclusive scope, all confirmed — is now shown only as an informational badge, never a scoring input. Today, effectively no peptide lab qualifies for it.

Because this reweight only renamed and redistributed sub-criteria within the same axis totals, no published compound or vendor grade changed. We corrected the reasoning, not the ranking. The full write-up is on our methodology page.

7. What we couldn’t verify (caveats, not accusations)

Honesty cuts both ways. Several labs we could not clear either direction, and it would be wrong to imply otherwise:

  • Ethos Analytics. Ethos’s ISO 17025 accreditation is genuine (A2LA). What we could not confirm from the public A2LA scope document is whether peptide purity/identity falls within the accredited scope versus an unaccredited service line. We are not saying Ethos excludes peptides — only that we couldn’t verify inclusion from the primary source.
  • Colmaric. A likely-real PJLA certificate (#86258), but we did not read the peptide-specific scope, so the peptide scope is unverified. We are not asserting either way.
  • ILS scope. As above, ILS’s claim itself doesn’t verify; its scope, likewise, is unread/unverified.
  • MDx BioAnalytical. Was PJLA-accredited, and per its own site the accreditation is now lapsed with re-accreditation pending. That is a status in transition — not grounds to call MDx “unaccredited.” We note it as pending.

The honest bottom line

Accreditation is a real and valuable thing — where it exists, in scope, and verifiably. For peptide COAs specifically, that combination is, as best we can determine, essentially unavailable industry-wide today. So the responsible move is not to chase a badge almost no one can earn, but to grade what a buyer can actually check: independent, portal-verifiable, lot-matched, method-transparent testing, corroborated by a second source.
